Skull Yellow is inspired by M. C. Escher’s work on skulls. A skull tessellation is wrapped around the skull itself. The eye is a scaled down version of the entire image. Look closely and you’ll see that this is repeated infinitely.
The skulls are decorated as calaveras – also known as sugar skulls. These are used in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos).
This artwork is part of a series of three. In each, the main skull is uniquely detailed and coloured so that the they work as single canvases or as a triptych.
I hand-make every artwork canvas myself. They are digitally printed and stretched over pinewood frames.
